What Not to Pack

packingMoving can be such an off-putting task, particularly when you have lots of belongings. You pack them up, the movers come get them, the movers deliver those items to your new home, and then you have to unpack the very things you had just packed. And this is the only way in which packing is going to be done.

You should remember that it is always better to take valuable and irreplaceable items with you, don’t transport them on the truck. Besides, there are several items that cannot be put on the truck, including explosives, compressed gases, flammable liquids and solids, oxidizers, poisons, corrosives, radioactive and other hazardous materials.

The following are the examples of items that cannot be moved: nail polish remover, paints and paint thinners, propane cylinders, radio-pharmaceuticals, automotive repair and maintenance chemicals, matches, lighter fluid, petrol, fireworks, oxygen bottles.

Other items not recommended for transport on the van include: firearms, family photos, food in glass jars and perishable foods, prescription medications needed for immediate use.

Transport items of personal importance with you, such as: cash, valuable collections (i.e., coins), important personal documents (i.e., deeds, wills), negotiable papers (i.e., bonds, stocks, certificates), jewelry, furs, precious stones or metals, moving documents, stocks and bonds.

These special items may be packed, but as they are invaluable to you, do not pack them to move in the truck – be sure to take them with you.

If you have pets, you need to make arrangements to move them. There is a federal regulation that prohibits movers from being able to transport animals in their vans. That’s why you must place your pet in a cage or carrier in your car and move your pet yourself.

Not moving live plants is another thing that is federally controlled. But there is an exception – if your destination is within 150 miles. If so, they can move them. You have to check with the movers and their individual policies.
